The incredibly simple design of the DPM brought it superior reliability, rendering it a venerable weapon system even on today's battlefield.

The DPM entered service with the Russian Army late in WWII.
It supplemented and then replaced the DP-28s that were in service.
It was the standard ground forces machine gun for Communist Armies well into the 1970's.
This is the later Degtyarev that features a pistol grip, improved drive spring system and high mounted folding bipod.
